Goals for Transitional Year Resident

Ophthalmic Pathology Goals

  1. Begin to appreciate the gross and histologic appearance of ocular specimens and their pathological changes.
  2. Learn how specimens can be processed to preserve information on orientation, and the importance of communicating on the requisition or directly to the pathologist the clinical differentials, questions or margins of particular interest.

Neuromuscular Pathology Goals

  1. Attend Neuromuscular Conference, Tuesdays 3:30-4:30 PM.

Neuropathology Goals

  1. Attend Topics in Experimental Neuropathology Conference, Thursdays 9:00-10:00 AM.
  2. Attend Neuropathology QA Conference, Thursdays 10:00-11:00 AM.
  3. Attend Brain Cutting, Fridays 12:00-5:00 PM.

OR: Work in advance with Dr. Schoedel to schedule exposure to Head & Neck or Dermatopathology for the other days of the week (M, W, Th, F).

 

Expectations for Transitional Year Resident

  1. The Ophthalmic Pathology rotation hours are Tuesdays from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM
  2. Be on time or call ahead (412-624-9415) if emergency comes up.  Coordinate with the NP fellow to preview enucleations, to help track down history, or examine a few microscopic cases prior to weekly signout that typically begins at 9:00 AM.  Christina Romanello in Room S701 Scaife hall can provide name and office location of the NP fellow that is on service.  Enucleation conference is in A808 Scaife Hall and Microscopic conference in A720 Scaife Hall.
  3. Remember to coordinate and notifiy dates of vacation or cross coverage in advance.
  4. The ophthalmology resident is responsible for completing self-study according to the EyePathUnknown Excel sheet and Reading Assignments Word doc, regardless of ability to attend Tuesday enucleation and microscopic conferences for that week.
