Fellowship

Clinical and/or post-doctoral research fellowships in Neuropathology are available in the Division of Neuropathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Fellows can be supported for 1 to 4 years to develop clinical neuropathological expertise and/or to develop an active research program applicable to neurologic diseases. For Board certification, clinical training includes one year of adult and pediatric neuropathology, 5 months of combination neurodegenerative / neuromuscular pathology and 1 month of combination neuroradiology / forensic neuropathology. Research interests within the division include mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and HIV encephalitis, oncology, neurotransplantation, oxidative stress, and central control of obesity (http://neuro.pathology.pitt.edu/webstuff/faculty&fellows.html). The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, seeks an exceptional scientist as Director of its Alzheimer's Disease Center of Excellence reporting directly to Stanley Appel, MD, Chair of Neurology. This NIH funded scientist (MD) will have the unique opportunity to build this program from the ground up.
Highlights of this opportunity include:
o USNews & World Report ranks The Methodist Hospital's Neurological Institute 9th in the country.
o The Methodist Hospital System consist of 1,450 beds and partners with Weill Cornell College of Medicine/New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. There are 3,500 beds available for clinical investigation and clinical trials. Additional ambulatory care facilities and acute care bed expansions are slated for completion over the next few years.
o The Methodist Hospital Research Institute is in an unprecedented expansion phase that includes building a new 420,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility. The new facility will include a 50,000 sq. ft vivarium, animal imaging, and the core facilities necessary to enhance interdisciplinary research.
o The Methodist System has the vision and the funding to support this venture.
The successful applicant will have well funded research and an established reputation for building productive teams focused in the area of Alzheimer's Disease. He/She must be a Board Certified Neurologist or Neuropathologist with the ability to obtain licensure in Texas.
