NEUROPATHOLOGY PROCEDURE MANUAL
Autopsy Flow
- Day of Autopsy
- Consultation with Neuropathology Fellow
- Goals of Autopsy discussed
- Autopsy performed
- Brain fixed or dissected and banked
- NP sheet filled out by brain banking team
- Brain banker gives sheet to Neuropathology Secretary
- Folder is made by the Neuropathology Secretary
- Week before Brain Cutting
- Thursday
- Neuropathology Secretary makes and distributes a list of brains for the following Monday
- Neuropathology Secretary prepares NP folders for all the cases which include: NP brain banking sheet if the case was banked, PAD, and clinical summary
- Neuropathology Secretary delivers folders to NP fellow
- NP fellow distributes folders to all rotating residents
- Friday
- Neuropathology resident creates addendum and enters normal gross template and enters "neuro-relevant" history under "procedure/addendum entry edit" under other neuro text
- Day 1 of Brain Cutting (Monday)
- Brains are cut first Monday after 7 days of fixation
- Gross reviewed with NP fellow at 8:00 AM
- Neuro-relevant clinical history rehearsed
- Presented to attending at 8:30 AM
- Sections taken
- Gross description and impressions entered
- Day 2 (Tuesday)
- Gross report reviewed with attending and preliminary signed out.
- Day 4 (Thursday)
- H&E stained slides delivered to signout area (if they are not received, call Histology at 7-7660)
- Slides reviewed by resident and special stains are ordered if necessary
- Day 5 (Friday)
- H&E reviewed by resident and Neuropathologist
- Micro and final diagnosis dictated (provisional diagnosis dictated if special stains are pending)
