Weekly Work Flow

Monday

Adult Brain Cutting - Neuropath room in morgue area - 8:00 A.M. Try to get in at 7:45 to make sure the brain cutting stations are set up. There can be a lot of intra-ops on Monday morning so it may be necessary give the service pager to the second-on-call attending. Don't forget to take the blocks up to the gross room and enter the gross description into Copath on the same day if possible (NPAGN is the quicktext). Please see the Brain Cutting checklist for specifics.

Sign-out when you can. There may be Children's brain cutting and the attending pathologist has a lot of meetings to attend on Monday.

Rushes usually arrive between 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. (in theory). Christina will put these together with the paper work but it is very important to sort them - ONE CASE PER TRAY - with paperwork before sign-out.
BE SURE TO RETRIEVE ASSOCIATED SMEARS from the Neuropath box in the gross room on the 6th floor.
Routines, decals and histochemical slides usually arrive after noon. Christina will take care of the discs and endarterectomy specimens but be on the lookout for decal portions of pending tumor cases.
Immunos usually come some time after 3:00 P.M. (often after 5:30!!!). We try to sign everything out the same day but addenda can often wait until the next day.

Medical Student Teaching 3:00-5:00 P.M. in the Neuropathology gross room next to the sign-out room. Not mandatory but a good review. Try to attend.

Adult Neuro-Oncology Conference 5:00-6:00 P.M. A good chance to see the neurosurgeons with their masks off.

Pediatric Brain Cutting 10:30-11:30 in Children's Pathology Department. Mandatory and very interesting.

Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Conference 11:30 P.M. Not mandatory.

Tuesday

Sign-out. Another busy O.R. day so you will be interrupted. Go over QA cases for the next day with the attending. Make sure all of the pictures are taken and print out final reports. Fill out the top part of the QA forms for each case so they are ready to go in the morning.

Muscle Conference - either sign-out room or NP Library 4:00-5:00 P.M. Your only chance to see this stuff so attend.

Wednesday

Topics in Experimental Neuropathology - NP Library 9:00 A.M. Mandatory. Don't forget to fill out an evaluation form and sign the attendance sheet.

QA - NP Library 10:00 A.M. Very mandatory.

Sign-out (eventually).

Thursday

Neurodegenerative Brain Cutting - Neuropath room in morgue area 9:00-11:00 A.M. Go immediately from the Totten room to the morgue on Tuesday morning. This is protected time so give the service pager to the attending.

Sign-out. Usually a busy OR day.

REMIND ATTENDING TO PICK OUT SLIDES FOR FRIDAY MICROSCOPIC CONFERENCE. THEY MUST GET SLIDES TO CHILDREN'S BEFORE 3:00 P.M.

Friday

Neurodegenerative Microscopic Conference - sign-out room 10:00 AM to 12:00. This is protected time for residents so give service pager to attending. Do not miss.

Sign-out. Pick cases for next week's QA if possible. Catch up on picture taking. Go over autopsy cases for brain cutting on Monday. Attempt to sign-out previous autopsy cases (slides come out Thursday or Friday) or order any necessary special stains. Check the O.R. schedule for Saturday and Monday before leaving for the day.

Microscopic Conference 8:00 A.M. Not mandatory but interesting.

Saturday

PUH
Re-check OR schedule in morning. Let attending know about any changes. Rush slides come in at approximately 10:00-10:30 A.M. and are put into the "Karen Weber” mailbox in the resident's room. Bigs come in much later - don't worry about them until Monday.
